  • Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Laws: Comprehensive knowledge of key healthcare fraud and abuse laws, including the False Claims Act, Stark Laws, and Anti-Kickback Statute, along with their associated penalties.

  • Impact of PPACA: Analyzing how the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) affects medical practices.

  • Other Relevant Laws and Regulations: Familiarity with additional laws and regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).

  • Handling Investigations: Developing skills to manage investigations, including understanding self-disclosure protocols.

  • Corporate Integrity Agreements (CIAs) and Certificate of Compliance Agreements (CCAs): Understanding the requirements and implications of CIAs and CCAs.

  • Current Investigative Activities: Staying informed about current investigative activities, including those conducted by Recovery Audit Contractors (RACs), Zone Program Integrity Contractors (ZPICs), and Medicaid Fraud Control Units (MFCUs).

  • Identifying and Managing Risk Areas: Recognizing and addressing various risk areas such as gifts and gratuities, conflicts of interest, use of Advance Beneficiary Notices, teaching physician guidelines, and incident-to services.
